Atoms Up 1 in WOAA Finals
The Foxton Fuels Atom Rep team travelled to Ayton on Feb. 10 to start their WOAA finals series with West-Grey (Durham and Normanby). Both teams had come off of 3-1 series wins over Seaforth and Minto.
This was a fast end to end game with 2 strong skating teams. West-Grey got on the board first when a long shot rocketed off the end boards and caught a surprised Wingham defence off guard. The home team popped in the rebound for a 1-0 lead. Maitland Higgins tied the game at 1 with a point shot through traffic. West-Grey responded quickly to regain the lead and then added a 3rd goal late in the period for a 3-1 lead.
Wingham started to gain momentum in the second and began to take the play to West-Grey. Connor Dickson scored to put Wingham within 1 and Thomas Gangl went end to end late in the period, putting the puck into the top corner to tie the game at 3 after 2 periods.
Both teams had chances in the third period, but with 4:48 left Sam Young was able to stuff the puck past the West-Grey netminder and Wingham held off the home team for a 4-3 win in game 1.
Game 2 will be played in Wingham on Feb. 14 at 6:45 p.m. with game 3 in Wingham on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 3:30 p.m.
