Wingham Bantam Ironmen Kick off the 2012-13 Season - by Bev Reidy
The Wingham Ironmen Bantam Local League team has kicked off their season to a good start, having recorded three wins and one tie. The coaching staff consists of Randy Fitch, head coach; Wade Smith, assistant coach; Mark Moores, trainer; and Phil Smith manager/trainer. The members include Sam Marston, Austin Fitch, Rylee Fear, Evan Fraser, Jackson Goodall, Logan Hemeon, Josh Hoy, Les Irvine, Wyatt McIlhargey, Tyler Cronin, T.J. Moores, Maison Nesbitt, Jack Reidy, Merrick Smith, and Connor Smith.

On Sunday, November 11th, Wingham was host to the Minto Mad Dogs. Les Irvine got the ball rolling with a single-handed goal halfway through the first period. It was quickly followed up by a goal from Wyatt McIlhargey, and assisted by Jackson Goodall and Les Irvine. Late in the period, Rylee Fear scored the third goal with an assist going to T.J. Moores. The second period opened with lots of action in front of the Minto net. Eighteen seconds in, the fourth goal was netted by Connor Smith and assisted by Fear. Goodall, Hemeon, McIlhargey, Fear, and Nesbitt accumulated six more goals during the game. The additional assists went to Irvine, McIlhargey, Goodall, and Fraser. Strong defensive lines consisting of Reidy, Moores, Fraser, and Merrick Smith prevented the Minto team from any chance at scoring opportunities. Sam Marston earned a well-deserved shut out, as a result.

Wingham traveled to Clinton on Tuesday, November 13th to take on the BCH Ice Dogs. The first period proved that BCH was an even match for the Wingham team. Austin Fitch was between the pipes and held off BCH, with no score showing on the board. During the second period, the Ice Dogs netted three goals. Wingham battled back in the third but to no avail. BCH scored another goal. It was quickly followed up by a puck to the top shelf, scored by Leslie Irvine and assisted by Logan Hemeon. The final score was 4-1 in favour of BCH and was recorded as Wingham’s first loss of the season.

Our next game is scheduled for Dec. 1st in Wingham against the Blyth Brussels Bulldogs at 3:15 p.m. Come on out and cheer us on!
