Ironmen Bantam Local League Team is Consolation Champions
By Bev Reidy
The Ironmen Bantam Local League team played in the Clifford Tournament that took place on Saturday, January 19th and brought home the consolation trophy.

The first game was against the Hanover Falcons. The Falcons proved to be too much for the Wingham team, winning 4-2 in the opening game. Our first goal was scored by Maison Nesbitt and assisted by Leslie Irvine. The second goal went to defenseman Jack Reidy, unassisted.

The first consolation game was against the Arran Elderslie Ice Dogs. This game provided a more evenly matched opponent and no score was recorded after the first period. Late in the second, Rylee Fear was able to net the first goal with an assist going to Nesbitt. A third period goal was scored by Irvine with assists going to Fear and Nesbitt. Excellent goal tending gave Sam Marston a shut out resulting in a 2-0 victory over the Ice Dogs.

The final match up was against the Goderich Sailors. Too much pizza and a long break between games were to blame for a slower start in the first and second periods. The Wingham team regrouped after the flood and came out with a winning attitude in the third. The first goal went to Josh Hoy with assists going to Merrick Smith and TJ Moores. Smith was able to net the next goal assisted by Fear. Nesbitt was quick off the face off to score the third goal with a pass from Moores. A forth goal by Smith and assisted by Nesbitt followed again in rapid succession. Smith earned a hat trick on the fifth goal with the help of Fear. Forwards Irvine, Wyatt McIlhargey, Connor Smith, Jackson Goodall, and Logan Hemeon kept the puck moving throughout the period. Moores, Evan Fraser, and Reidy provided the defense that kept the puck out of our end. Austin Fitch was vigilant between the pipes, yielding only to one puck. The final score was 5-1 in favor of Wingham, securing the consolation championship.

Play resumes Tuesday night with the puck dropping at 7:30 pm in Seaforth.
