Wingham U9 Blue LL Off to Good Start
Submitted By Dave Tiffin on Wed 12 15, 21
The Wingham U9 Blue team has gotten off to a good start this season. After having last year cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the kids were hungry to get on the ice and hone their skills. For at least 1 player, this was the 1st opportunity to play hockey.

Once the teams were chosen, the team set into a practice schedule, working on skating, puck control, passing and shooting. Nolan Garniss took on the role of goaltender, which was anew position to him, as well as getting used to the new equipment. Nolan settled in well, anddid a great job in the games and practices. Our division includes teams from Seaforth, Blyth-Brussels, Zurich, BCH, and CentralPerth, with games scheduled against South Bruce, Howick and Kincardine as well. We are made up of 10 players, 6 girls and 4 boys. Each game the team has shown steady improvement, from a lopsided game vs Seaforth, where the ice was tilted in Seaforth’s favor, to a little closer game vs BCH, the team has had tight matches with Central Perth, Blyth-Brussels, and played a spirited affair against a strong Zurich team. Coach Dennis has made it a point to tell the group that “the mother’s will yell really loud, if we can score a goal!” and the kids, (and Mom’s) haven’t disappointed. We have had multiple goalscorers, as well as good passing, and defense from this group. Reed MacTavish is taking a turn between the pipes now, after starting the year as a solid rushing defenseman, scoring some highlight reel goals. Our girls, Madison Davenport, Claudia Doyon, Jenna McLean, Kolbie Chester, Bryn Devos and Kalyn Haggitt have all bulged the twine at least once this year, and continue to develop their skills. Bentley Morrison has continued his strong play from U8, and 1st year player Christiaan Grundlingh has made huge strides, improving in all facets of the game. After already enjoying a trip to London, to play on the big ice at Budweiser Gardens, vs the U9 Red team, the team is looking forward to a few things in the new year. We are currently scheduled for 2 tournaments; the U9 LL Silver Stick in Parkhill January 21-23, and the CanadianTire Cup in Hanover in February
